Ile d'Oléron is, after Corsica, the largest island of France. From of the beach you can see the special and famous Fort Boyard. The fort is 67 yards (61 m.) long, 34 yards (31 m.) in width and 22 yards (20 m.) in height. The fort was built by Napoleon and used to be a protection against the English. Another attraction that is well-known and definitely worth the visit is Saint Georges, a former monastery city from the 10th century (the church is still in use). By bike you can use one of the many bicycle paths that this island has, in the north you find a biking trail between Saint-Denis-d'Oléron and the light house of Chassiron. Or try the bicycle path in the south around Château d'Oléron. If you combine this with a picknick you have a relaxing and sportive day at once! If you like seafood this campsite is perfect for you. Ile d'Oléron is world famous for fishing and the oyster nurseries. In one of the many restaurants you can eat delicious, fresh fish and crustaceans. Or visit the harbour of La Cotinière where you can buy fresh langoustines and shrimp!
